The Office of Fair Trading found customers were being misled Even though prices have slipped back from as much as 72p a litre to around 58p, it still costs more than £1,000 to fill a typical 2,000 litre domestic tank.Prices are so high that heating oil has become a target for thieves who siphon it off under cover of darkness – the number one rural crime in some counties.

The OFT found that WCF Fuels was claiming to make comparisons on its site fuelfighter.co.uk, when in fact it gave prices for its own products only. It also featured fake customer testimonials.Boiler Juice offered price comparisons at boilerjuice.co.uk but failed to make clear that it is run by DCC, which owns GB Oils, the UK’s largest heating oil distributor.Investigators also told Johnston Oils to modify cheapheatingoil.

The changes that we have secured mean that people buying domestic heating oil will be better able to compare deals on offer.’ Consumer Focus welcomed the action and said households reliant on heating oil had been hit by massive bills last winter.‘With heating oil customers usually facing much higher heating bills than gas customers, it is important that they are able to shop around easily to find the best deal around,’ said spokesman Adam Scorer.
